A Welcome Message from the Chair

Dr. Rozanne Sandri-Goldin, chair, Department of Microbiology & Molecular Generics
Rozanne Sandri-Goldin, PhD, chair, Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics
Welcome to the Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics at the UCI School of Medicine

We are a community of 12 faculty and approximately 50 senior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and PhD graduate students. In addition, 10 faculty in other departments with shared research interests hold joint appointments.

As scientific investigators, we are actively engaged in innovative research and discovery, as well as in training the next generation of researchers through our PhD graduate program and in teaching the next generation of physicians in our medical school courses.

Our research spans the broad areas of microbiology and molecular genetics.

Six of our faculty who focus on microbiology probe the molecular basis of infectious diseases and the host responses to infection through the study of bacterial, viral and parasitic infections.

Six of our faculty who focus on molecular genetics investigate the molecular, genetic and epigenetic basis of diseases ranging from cancer to epilepsy to Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Our research activities are supported by federal, state and private funding agencies.

Many of our faculty have achieved both national and international recognition for their research accomplishments and are the recipients of numerous awards and honors.

In addition, the department’s interdisciplinary research is complemented by interactions with students, staff and faculty in other UC Irvine departments in the School of Medicine, the School of Biological Sciences, the School of Physical Sciences and the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences.

The UCI campus is located in the city of Irvine, less than five miles from the Pacific Ocean, 40 miles south of Los Angeles and 75 miles north of San Diego. The area offers theater, concerts, comedy clubs, night life and many excellent restaurants.

Within a short drive, Southern California offers surfing, fishing, skiing, snowboarding and many opportunities for hiking. Irvine has been rated as one of America’s safest cities.

I hope you find our site to be a useful window through which you can get a glimpse into the life of the department and learn about our innovative research programs and biomedical teaching mission.

Thanks for visiting.
